Dig Deep and Uncover The Pain

Michael Hamburger Scottsdale, AZGreat day my friends.  I recently had an experience that I think all of us involved in marketing and sales can learn from, myself included. I recently had the privilege of attending a phenomenal MLM company’s award trip for their top 200+ distributors.  I was there as an invited guest of the owners as an industry consultant.  While on this amazing trip, I had the opportunity to connect with a large number of their reps.  These are top notch, amazing people.  Among these superstars, I met one of their reps and we really got along nicely. I vividly recall many wonderful conversations and a budding friendship growing from this mutual experience.  What I am going to share next is not meant to embarrass anyone.  Rather, I believe their is a valuable lesson for all of us to learn or refresh ourselves with.  I’m certain this has been me in the past at some point over my selling career.


A few weeks later, this gentleman followed up with me to invite me to join his team. He wrote, “Well I would be stupid if I did not at least throw this out at you. I need to sponsor you (or your wife) and let you be Company XYZ’s top distributor since we both agree this is such a great company and business opportunity!! LOL”.

I was extremely polite and responded, “Thanks for the invite. We both really like Company XYZ, however I will not be joining your team.”

His reply really got me thinking, “I guess I missed out again. I really wanted you on my team…

He needed me and wanted me? Did he ever bother to find out what I needed or wanted?  No. Not once.  His statements left me feeling like I was a prize that could be of value to him vs. what his offering or opportunity could do for me and my basic needs/wants.

Rather than focusing on me and my desires, the recruitment conversation was all about what I could do for him. There is nothing wrong with that if you sit on a thrown. If you are in sales or you lead people, then you’ll surely go broke or have to wait to get “lucky” (this is the result of dedication and working your tail off non-stop to achieve the object of your desires and manifestation – different topic altogether for another time).  How could we begin a business relationship when it was all about him?  In direct sales, we are taught that the path to success is to uncover your prospect’s pain.

Michael Hamburger - SteakI remember one of my early MLM mentors sharing this basic principle with me, “Never make your prospect feel like your next meal ticket.”  I’ve got kids and that means we watch more kid movies than I care to ever admit.  If you’ve ever seen the movie “Madagascar” you may remember the part where Alex the lion is hungry and when he looks at his best friend the Zebra, he sees steak instead of his friend.  We tend to put this type of energy off to our prospects when we focus on how they can fill our needs or fill our pipeline.

I think the important lesson in this entire experience is that we really need to find out the driving factor for our prospect. We must remember to make the experience all about them and solving their pain. By doing so, we will increase our sales and percentages but we will also grow our team’s and our bottom line. Plus, we won’t leave people around us feeling weird or used.

Dale Carnegie wrote a fabulous book called, “How to Win Friends and Influence People” that I believe everyone involved in the selling profession deserves to read.  He stated that if you make your conversations about the person you are speaking with rather than about you, people will like you and you will gain influence.  Think that is important?  When is the last time you bought something from someone you didn’t like?  Now, I am not talking about speaking with someone over the phone for a utility, cable, etc.  I’m talking about something of significance.  Did you like the person you bought your home or car from?  You may not be BFF’s but the odds are stacked in the favor that you at least liked them in the moment.  We humans tend to do business with people we know, like and trust.  Want people to like and trust you?  Ask them questions about themselves.  People love talking about themselves and they will walk away from your conversation most likely liking you and your time together.

To dial this into what we do for a living, Find out what they desire and uncover their pain in one of the core 4 areas of their life: time, money, freedom and/or control!  Find out THEIR MOTIVATION not yours.  You already know your motivation or you should…  Your prospects will want to know that you have a direction and you are on purpose.  Save the “all about me” time for later.  

Discover who your prospect is.  Discover what drives them?  Discover the “pain” in the life: time, money, freedom and control.


This week I challenge you to ask your prospects probing questions.  Dig Deep.  Uncover your prospect’s PAIN.  Remember, most people’s greatest challenge or pain revolves around time, money, freedom and control.  As a direct sales/MLM business owner your opportunity can be their solution.

By asking questions and discovering your prospects motivation, you will gain a vast amount of perspective of what your prospect wants but you will also be able to assist them in achieving what is important to your prospect.  By doing this, you will more easily accomplish your desired outcome.  Zig Ziglar always said that if you can help enough people get    what it is they want, then you’ll naturally take care of getting what you want.  This is huge.  Maya Angelou said that, “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”  I feel that by leading with these core concepts, you’ll not only gain customers but you’ll also gain loyal friends that want to buy from you and hang out with you!

$10,000 for a Hammer

One of my favorite stories about the explaining the value of bringing in someone who has been around the block a few times in terms of expertise and experience goes like this:

Knowing where to hit the machineOne day in a large factory with a long assembly line a critical piece of equipment suddenly stopped working. This one machine brought the factory’s entire assembly line to a complete halt.  Partially finished products were backed up all through the factory. The company that owned the factory was in a complete panic as they were losing tens of thousands of dollars for every minute that the factory was shut down.  The workers were nervous, as they didn’t know what to do or say to bring this machine back to life.  No amount of fiddling by the operators or floor engineers could get the machine fired up. No one on the factory floor knew how to get this critical component back online.

The managers and executives were in a frenzy and didn’t know what to do either.  They knew there had to be a way to get this resolved and online or they would lose an enormous amount of money.

The chief mechanic was called in and he insisted that there was only one expert who he knew could correct the problem quickly so the factory could be online making money again.  Needless to say, the expert was called in. When the expert arrived, he examined the halted machine from this angle and that angle, skillfully moving all around for about ten minutes.  He then went and removed a hammer from his toolbox.  He walked up to the machine and inspected one specific spot before he struck the machine once with the hammer.  A loud whack was heard throughout the factory floor.  Suddenly the machine came back to life and started running at full capacity. Goods started moving smoothly down the assembly line at full rate and the factory was back online.  The workers sighed a sigh of relief.  The corporate executives rejoiced.

The expert then presented the chief mechanic with a bill for $10,000. “This is outrageous!” the mechanic exclaimed “10,000 dollars to hit a machine with a hammer? You spent ten minutes here just to hit it with a hammer!!!! I’ll require an itemized bill for this!”

• Hitting machine with hammer $1.00

• Knowing where to hit machine $9,999.00

Get In Get Out and Get PAID

USA – Australia Pen Pals for 55 Years

OK, I’ll admit.  This is NOT the typical kind of post you’ll get from me.  Normally I’m the guy pounding my chest telling people how amazing and life-changing being an entrepreneur can be (and it is – shameless plug).

Today’s post is WAY different.  This is one of those “feel good” make me want to hug a friend and cry kind of stories.  Over the past year, my family has had the opportunity to become very close with another family here in Scottsdale.  I’ve known the husband for several years.  We’ve been professional friends and real friends.  It was when he transplanted his wife and kids to Scottsdale that our friendship took on an entirely new existence.  Our wives became “BFF’s” and our kids became friends.  It’s a good thing too, since we really like each other’s company.  Anyway, it was a few months ago that my friend Carla told me the craziest story.  Her mom Linda has had a pen pal for over 50 years. If that’s not cool enough, the story gets rich.  Apparently her pen pal lives in Australia and they’ve been writing each other since they were little kids in 4th grade.  They’ve never met in person, they’ve never spoken over the phone, they just started using the internet to write, they’ve not “Facebook’d” each other.  We’re talking about good old fashioned pen pals.  Here’s the kicker.  My friend’s mom Linda and her pen pal are about to meet LIVE and IN-PERSON in just under a week.  Apparently her pen pal is coming to Arizona to stay with her friend for 3 weeks.  I think I’ll have to go watch this as it unfolds at the airport.  It’s on the calendar.  I cannot wait to experience this with them!

    Childhood Pen Pals Meet After 55 Years

    Local Arizonan Hosts Australian Pen Pal

    GILBERT, AZ —- In 1958, Australian native Wendy Norrie’s 4th grade class was taught by Mr. Wilcox. Guided by their teacher, the small class looked up all cities in the United States with his name and settled on Wilcox, Nebraska as their target. At the time, Wilcox, NE had a population of about 300. When its 4th grade class of approximately 18 students was invited to be pen pals with a class in New South Whales Australia, Linda (Golter) Martin signed on. Martin chose and answered the letter from Norrie and the two have been writing ever since; that was over 55 years ago. Young Martin and Norrie shared their lives in ink. Norrie’s family was sheep ranchers while Martin’s family were Midwestern crop farmers. When they first began, they wrote every two to three months. Martin learned new words like “veranda” which meant porch, “frock” which meant dress, and “lorry” which meant truck. The budding friendship expanded her vocabulary and her world. Over the years and as they aged the frequency of their letter writing slowed while their sharing increased. Annual letters were filled with family news, marriages, divorce, kids, health issues, family deaths, grandchildren, jobs, travel, hobbies, and celebrations. In addition, having each sharing in a birthday within two weeks of Christmas, Martin in December and Norrie in January, they began the tradition of sending calendars representative of their country as gifts for one another. In their 55-year relationship, Martin and Norrie have never spoken. In fact until recently, they have only written using traditional mail to deliver their correspondence. A few months ago Martin received an email from Norrie who excitedly shared that she was planning her first visit to the U.S. Martin returned an email suggesting Norrie visit the Grand Canyon. Shortly thereafter it was decided that Norrie would visit Martin and her husband for a three-week stay. During her vacation, Norrie and the Martins will be exploring the Grand Canyon, Sedona, Flagstaff, Las Vegas, Yuma, Mexico, Scottsdale, the Phoenix area, and their hometown of Gilbert.


    Norrie arrives Monday, September 16th at 12:49 p.m. on US Airways flight #625 at Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport. A welcome breakfast with friends and family will be held Tuesday, September 17th at Saguaro Lake Restaurant in Saguaro Lake. Media is welcome to record the arrival and meeting of Martin and Norrie. Pen pal letters and photos available upon request.
