Labor Day 2011

Today is Labor Day in the U.S. and like most people I know, I’ve been giving my grill a major workout all weekend long! Traditionally, this day marks the end of the summer vacation season, college football gets into high gear and even though we haven’t had much of a break in the heat here in northern hemisphere, this is also a symbolic time of year when folks shake off the dog days of summer and make that mental shift to get down to business again as another school year gets underway.

One of the great things about any holiday is the break in routine – the opportunity to look at life from a fresh perspective and take inventory on our priorities. We get so caught up in barbeques, parties and last minute getaways before the kids head back to school that it’s easy to forget where Labor Day and other celebrations like it around the world originally came from. I looked it up this morning and was reminded that legislation to make Labor Day an official federal holiday in the U.S. was actually rushed through Congress in the 19th century in the aftermath of the Pullman Strike that ended in violence during Grover Cleveland’s administration.

As entrepreneurs, Labor Day gives us a lot to think about. The old paradigm is gone forever. Gone are the days when we can rely on a job, an employer, a corporation or even a government program to carry us safely into the future. If you’ve read Crashproof Prosperity by Kip Herriage, you understand that the age old conflicts between “management” and “labor” completely miss the point of the realities unfolding around us. Labels like this serve no purpose but to create division between people and have nothing to do with how wealth is really created. Money follows value. Always has. Always will. It’s all about choices and actions. Some choices and actions add value and others take it away. Everything else is academic.

So where does that leave us? Fully in charge of our own destinies. Fortunately, we still live in a world where hard work has the same power to create abundance that it’s always had – provided that it’s channeled in a single, positive direction and based on a passionate belief in solid success principles. As you look around you today and reflect on the blessings in your life, take time out to renew a few commitments to yourself. Promise yourself that you will assume 100% responsibility for the results you’re getting in wealth, health and wisdom. Promise yourself that you will get totally clear on what matters to you most – the ideal scene you envision in your work, in your home, in your relationships and in your private time. Promise yourself that you will relentlessly develop the habits of thought and action necessary to make that ideal scene a reality.

Everything you’ve ever wanted in life is waiting for you just outside your comfort zone. It’s there for the taking, but no one is going to bring it to you. You already have everything you require to succeed inside of you, so there’s no reason to wait for the “perfect” conditions to start enjoying the rewards you desire TODAY! Have a safe and happy Labor Day and pass me that barbeque platter one more time!

Change is Good

We’re going through some big and positive changes in the community this week and it got me thinking… what’s really going to be NEW for YOU and for ME tomorrow and the next day and the day after that once all these fantastic enhancements are up and running? One of the most liberating and empowering lessons I ever learned in the direct marketing industry is that my past has absolutely nothing to do with my future. The results we get today are nothing more than the outcome of past choices… and choices can be changed in an instant. To begin getting new results, all you really have to do is start making (and ACTING on) new decisions.

Here’s the connection. New toys and gadgets and bells and whistles are always fun, and believe me when I tell you that we’re rolling out a set this week unlike anything you’ve seen before in this industry. But once all the tools and systems are in place, it’s PEOPLE who make them work… it’s PEOPLE who apply them to get an end result they’ve set their focus and intentions on. How many times have you heard someone say that they’ll start getting better results when they’ve had more practice on live calls, or when they’ve really mastered handling objections, or when they finish that big project at work, or when they quit their job, or when they know the product line a little better, or when they start getting more support from their spouse?

Your capacity to act right now, in the present moment, is every bit as powerful as that of any top producer you can name. What’s holding you back is not circumstances or tools or even time… you have access to the same 24 hours in a day that Warren Buffett, Bill Gates, Donald Trump and Brent Payne have. The limits we bump up against are the limits we set for ourselves… beliefs we’ve formed over time based on the experiences in our past. Let’s clear this up once and for all… your past has absolutely NOTHING to do with your future. What limiting beliefs can you let go of right now that might be holding you back? Is there a scarcity mentality about time, money, relationships or success that keeps you from making newer, more powerful choices?

Let me give you a quick, practical example. Whether we’re aware of them or not, most of us have subconscious “set points” about how much money we can make, how fulfilling our relationships can be or even about the quality of our experiences in life. You may have a goal card, a vision board and a list of affirmations all pointing to a seven figure income, but if you subconsciously believe that you’re only worth $30,000 a year because of what you or your friends or your parents earned in the past, your choices and actions… even the way you speak and carry yourself… aren’t going to be in alignment with that new number. Without even realizing it, you’re going be actively REJECTING the opportunities, relationships, and resources  that will propel you to seven figures.

Get this in a real, internal way and you’ll be amazed at the miraculous changes that start picking up speed and frequency in your life. Your past has nothing to do with your future. Change your set points. Update your belief system. Pay attention to that inner critic that tries to shout you down every time you affirm something better in your life… those are the unconscious set points… the limiting beliefs that must be re-written NOW. I KNOW without a doubt that you absolutely deserve an abundant life. I’m willing to celebrate the GREATNESS in you before you see it in yourself. No matter what tools or systems may be within reach on any given day, that one-two punch of new beliefs and relentless action will make you unstoppable.

Who cares? You better!

I’m looking out over Galveston Bay right now, enjoying a pool with a view and soaking up some coastal comforts with my family. It’s not like the beaches where our roots are in the American Southeast, or even from our “Hollywood” days in California, but it has a beauty all its own. Put me in, on or near just about any body of water and I’m a happy guy…even when it’s frozen! You know, it’s during times like these with my wife and daughters beside me that I really well up with gratitude and reflect on what this industry has made possible for us in such a comparatively short time. I wanted to share some of these reflections with you and talk about how they relate to the amazing mission we’re on together in the home business, direct-selling worldwide community.

Although I’ll ALWAYS be a marketer at heart, a big part of my role is being a success coach now that I’m on the “corporate” side of our industry. But you and I are still VERY close kin in the direct marketing business world… BOTH of us require a “why” to keep us on track. When I first found this industry around a decade ago, my “why” was to be able to retire my then fiancée, now my wife, from her job so that she could be a full time, stay-at-home CEO for our home and family. We’ve accomplished that and more on the way to fulfilling the dreams that this industry has made possible for us. Today, my “why” has evolved to seeing those dreams fulfilled in the lives of others, connecting them with the habits of thought and action that will turn them into the top producers of today… and tomorrow!

Beach trips like this reconnect me with my “why” in a powerful and immediate way. Think about the peak experiences you’ve shared with the people who mean the most to you. When you get down to what matters most, vacations are never about the cost of the trip or the square footage of the beach house. It’s unlikely that you’ll EVER recall how much lunch cost you on day 3 or how many gallons of gas you bought on the way home. What makes vacations important and what really counts the most when you strip away all the numbers is making MEMORIES with the ones you love… sharing experiences that connect you with one another in a meaningful way… things that add to QUALITY OF LIFE as YOU define it.

To get this point across in a more direct way, I’d like you to join with me in a little thought experiment. Right now I’m going to engage you in some mental telepathy while I’m sitting down here in Galveston. First, let’s imagine a dark room. Under the light of a shaded overhead lamp there’s a table for two with a red checkered tablecloth and two armless bentwood chairs. On the table are two empty wine glasses and a green wooden carving of a fish with a large number 7 painted on it. Do you see it? Your lampshade might be different from mine and you may see a mackerel instead of a carp, but chances are the scene is nearly identical for both of us… and we’re seeing it together right now. It’s pretty miraculous when you think about it.

Now that you’re sure we can do it, let’s try another one. As I’m sharing a peak experience with my family right now, I’d like you to picture a peak experience you’ve shared with someone you love. Do you have an image of it? How does it make you feel? THAT’S the feeling we want to attach to every goal and intention we set… every affirmation and commitment we make. You see, persistence alone isn’t enough to fill us up and keep us going. That sense of fulfillment… that sense of accomplishment… that sense of being in harmony with your life’s purpose you attach to the best memories you make is what gives you a REASON to persist no matter what kind of resistance you may encounter in life. That’s how you begin to get in touch with what quality of life really means to you. That’s how you discover your “why.”

Maybe now you can understand why I begin every single work day with positive chills of anticipation. This is the gift we’re giving to the world. One precious life at a time, we’re connecting people with a way to understand what quality of life really means to them through wealth, health and wisdom, and then empowering them with the means to achieve it in record time. It’s hard to imagine a calling in life that could give us more bragging rights than that. We’re bringing financial literacy and a real path to abundance to a world in need and the timing has never been more critical. In so many ways, literally AND figuratively, the life we lead with having a home-based business really is a “day at the beach.”

Be, Do, Have – Serious as a heart attack

By the time you read this, I’ll have already landed back in Houston and hit the ground running for the home office. At the moment, however, I happen to be at 32,000 feet over the Atlantic on my way back from one of the most exhilarating events I’ve ever attended. Of course, I’m talking about the conference we just wrapped up in Sorrento, Italy… the jewel of the Amalfi Coast… a truly amazing feast of sights, sounds, flavors and experiences! On my way back home I touched down for a quick but awe-inspiring stopover in Paris, the City of Lights and I have to tell you that this has been the BEST non-beach trip I’ve ever taken.

You know, over the course of my network marketing career, I’ve taken an active part in literally DOZENS of events and each one of them has added value to my life and helped me in countless ways to raise my game personally and professionally. Those who were there with me know EXACTLY what I’m talking about… if you stayed home and missed out, chalk it up to “lessons learned” and get over it, but by all means, make yourself an unbreakable promise right now that this is the LAST event you will ever fail to attend. Let me tell you why that’s so important.

In my “goal setting” presentation to the m3 audience, I talked about the “be-do-have” formula of abundance. The 97% of the population that remains stuck in a life of lack gets it completely backwards. They’re under the mistaken belief that they have to “have” more (time, money, status) so they can “do” the things they want to do, in the false hope that those things will help them “be” who they want to be. They get themselves caught in the “someday” trap, waiting until they lose that weight, earn those extra bucks, fix that bad relationship or any one of a dozen other arguments for missing out on the life they deserve. The universe doesn’t work that way.

True abundance starts flowing into your life when you’re totally committed to BEING the person you intend to be FIRST… by way of your thoughts, beliefs and choices. Only then will you be empowered to take the focused, purposeful action to DO the things that will allow you to have what you truly desire most. What does this have to do with live events? Before people really get this in a deep, internal way, they sabotage themselves by saying, “as soon as I make the extra money, I’m going to start buying those event tickets.” The universe doesn’t work that way.

Live events turn on the flow of money into your life in several important ways. First, they immerse you in possibility thinking with people who are already manifesting the things you desire on a regular basis. You become like the people you spend the most time with. Second, they position you to be in the path of extra income through connections, opportunities, introductions and encouragement that you won’t receive while you’re alone at home. You want to be networking with people that are getting the results you want to get. Third, they establish you as a leader who gets things done. People naturally want to follow someone who takes decisive action, and being visible at every event adds power and credibility to all of your team relationships.

Be. Do. Have. Be the leader who’s front and center at every live event. Think, speak and carry yourself like the top producer you envision in your mind’s eye and you’ll be empowered to act accordingly. The rewards will spill over into every area of your life in more ways… and more quickly and abundantly… than you can imagine. Make this commitment to yourself right now and I’ll see you at the top!

Who, what, when, where… WHY!

For as long as I can remember, I’ve been an avid (and active!) student of success, especially since I first found my way into the network marketing industry more than ten years ago. Along the way I’ve been privileged to meet some of the highest achievers in the world. Every success mentor I’ve ever studied makes pretty much the same point. They may have their own unique way of saying it and they usually prescribe different tools and techniques for capturing it, but from Napoleon Hill to the most successful person you know personally, they all agree that you can’t GET what you want until you KNOW what you want!

When I talk about knowing what you want, I don’t mean the vague wishes that everybody has for more money, better relationships or a more comfortable life. What I’m talking about here is having TOTAL CLARITY about what you want your life experience to be in every area – mind, body, spirit and emotions. It might shock you to discover how few people are really willing to put in the time and effort it takes to map out their lives in this kind of detail, but I can assure you with complete confidence that the wealthiest 1% of the population follows this one success habit without exception. They all create a powerful mental picture of what they want in vivid detail that energizes every decision and action.

If you happen feel stuck the first time you try this kind of visioning exercise, don’t beat yourself up about it. Most of us have been taught from a very early age to “go along to get along” and keep our dreams small, if we have any dreams at all. By the time kids reach the sixth grade, most of their creativity has been conditioned out of them with the expectation that there’s only one right answer. Independent thinking is almost never encouraged, especially when it comes to the ideas of wealth and success.  The truth is that there are no rules about how successful you can be. The only real limits on the abundance you create are the ones you set for yourself. If you’re ready to give it try, here are a few thought-starters to get you moving:

What inspires you? Are there activities that make you lose track of time? Are there certain things that seem to automatically raise your energy level, almost before you realize it? These are clues that point to your true desires in life.

Think back to conversations you’ve had with close friends or family members. If you can remember a time when your speech became more animated – when the words just seemed to flow – that’s your idea life calling to you. Make a few notes about these memories and you’ll be off to a great start toward defining what you really want.

What are you passionate about? Almost everyone has had the experience of seeing situation at work, at home or in the world at large and just “knowing” they could make it better. If you’ve ever felt driven to improve something in your life or in your environment, that’s another clue you can use to uncover your deepest desires.

What are the “wants” that truly motivate you? Is it having more discretionary income, more free time or a special accomplishment that has your name attached to it? Imagine all of these things as if they’ve already become real in your life and write them out in vivid detail.

Finally, knowing WHY you want these things will help you to stay on task. Whether it’s to realize a personal dream, make a change in the world or provide a better life for someone you love, knowing “why” your dream is important to you will keep you on course when the inevitable temptation comes to put it off for another day.

Think carefully one more time about this statement; you can’t GET what you want until you KNOW what you want. Once you have a clear destination in mind that you’re passionate about – like being a part of the life-changing 3 day Transform event in Hawaii – you’ll have a REASON to succeed, to persist and to be RELENTLESS. Nothing will be able to stand in your way. Having certainty about what you really, really want is the key to being unstoppable. The network marketing industry in general, and Avant in particular, is the best vehicle I know for making dreams come true, so make sure you…

Cooking It Up

Right now there’s a big, fresh beef brisket soaking up flavor in my refrigerator, waiting to be slow-grilled to perfection over the weekend. It’s just chillaxin’ in there like a movie star stretched out in a Palm Springs spa. I could tell you what’s in the top secret dry rub, but it’s not mine to give away… I got it from an industry insider who will be introduced to the Avant community in the next 30-60 days. When it comes to brisket on the grill, I’ve got it down to a science now and when I stick to the formula I get a predictable result every time… smoky crust on the outside, fork tender on the inside and plenty of ooh’s and aah’s all around the table… just the way I like it.

Family and friends know that I love to tear it up in the kitchen. When you’re at my table, I want you to enjoy the BEST, so I put a lot of time, effort and passion into perfecting each recipe. Sure, I’m always looking to expand my skills and learn new techniques, but I never stop building on the basics. Each time I reach for a new level of excellence, I always start by returning to the fundamentals… striving for perfection in the rudimentary skills that are common to ANY great culinary experience. You already see where I’m going with this, don’t you?

No matter how creative you get or how many variations you try, success in the kitchen really boils down to just three very basic things; 1) the right ingredients, 2) blended in the right proportions and the right sequence and 3) cooked at the right temperature for the right amount of time. Follow these steps without exception for ANY given recipe and you’ll get pretty much the same outcome every single time. From there, everything else is just nuance. There’s a comfort in having that kind of certainty and when your confidence goes up, so will your enjoyment.

The late comedian Richard Jeni did a hilarious spoof on cooking shows, saying, “Tonight we’re going to make a fabulously complicated dish using ingredients you’ve never heard of and utensils you can’t afford, in a kitchen that’s bigger than your whole [expletive deleted] apartment.” You saw this coming a mile away and here it is. The difference between a GREAT marketer’s results and a good marketer’s results has nothing to do with flashy techniques or expensive gear… it’s in the amount of DISCIPLINE and CONSISTENCY they devote to the fundamentals.

The right ingredients for great marketing are getting your message out there (advertising) and people to talk to (leads). A balanced blend of both is the LIFEBLOOD of this business. If you’re new and you don’t have a big advertising budget, there are dozens of low or no cost options out there you can start using today with virtually no risk. Even if you haven’t made your first sale yet, you’ve still got a powerful story to tell. You came to this opportunity in your own way and people will follow you if you concentrate on being the prosperous entrepreneur you envision in thought, word and deed, rather than identifying with any limitations in your past. Let ‘em go!

Once you’ve got the right stuff in the bowl in the right proportions, time and temperature seals the deal. Marketers who make it from good to great know that sticking to the fundamentals with the same level of intensity every single day over the long haul is what delivers the results. Distractions, rejections and setbacks are just a part of life that comes to multi-million dollar producers and raw beginners alike. What sets the winners apart from the wannabes is an unshakable “no matter what” attitude. No doubt about it, Avant is a “workers” business, but the rewards of consistency are unlike any other in our industry. We’re changing lives with products that matter and spreading a holistic message of financial literacy and freedom that’s available to ANYONE with the desire, drive and determination to create a better life. Let me know next time you’re in the Houston area… you just never know what’s cookin’ on the grill! What are you waiting for? Get out in that kitchen and rattle them pots and pans!

DREAM BIG!!!

Map Out Your Life

Mapping out the perfect life. Stop and think about this for a minute. How many people really invest the time and effort to map out a detailed plan… and then stick to it persistently and consistently? When we have a growth challenge in front of us, how many of us fall into the trap of making excuses and arguing for our limitations instead of making unbreakable appointments with ourselves to perform the daily actions that lead to success… no matter what?

Now don’t get me wrong. We’re not machines and I’m not suggesting that we take a militaristic view of life… in fact, quite the opposite. Quality of life (and the choices that come with time freedom, financial freedom and a balance of wealth, health and wisdom) is the whole reason we made the commitment to this business in the first place. What happens to many of us, however, is a temptation to pull back a little bit when we first step out of our comfort zones into the world of the entrepreneur.

I’m here to tell you that it’s okay to forge ahead and that the rewards of consistent daily action over time are yours for the taking. The kind of self-reliance and commitment to results I was taught as a U.S. Marine have served me time and time again as an entrepreneur and even though I don’t want your daily experience to be ANYTHING like what we went through in boot camp, the leadership traits they teach can really add ROCKET FUEL to your business. Let me give you a couple of quick examples

Successful people have what I call “inverted expectations.” When confronted with a challenge, the masses who settle for mediocre lives are conditioned to look for the minimum… the least effort they have to expend without losing the reward. While they may not always get there every time, Marines invert that and want to know what the “max” is for any given test. They don’t concern themselves with “minimums” for anything that’s worth their time and attention. In fact, if you ask a Marine, they probably don’t even know what the minimums are.

Like Marines, successful people are what I call “self-referential” or self-directed. People who are stuck in the wage system with a J-O-B usually look to others for direction or permission before they act. Sure, there’s a chain of command in the Marines – a strict one – but they encourage a kind of self-mastery that empowers every level of the organization to take decisive action based on the commander’s intent. They don’t use a changing environment as an excuse for failure to get results. Everyone is so clear on the objective that they’re ready take any initiative required to get there.

Are you going for the “max” every day as you work on yourself and your business? When you bump up against an obstacle like rejection or discouragement, do you have a plan in place that keeps you moving forward to your objective? Are you so clear about where you’re going that you’re ready to take decisive action no matter what’s going on around you? It takes a minimum of 21 days of unbroken exposure to a new way of thinking or acting in order to rewire your subconscious mind and form the habits that lead to success.

On any journey you take in life, across town, across the continent or all the way from where you are now to total prosperity, the only way to get there is the NEXT STEP. Set your destination, imagine it in vivid detail, be realistic about your starting point and then commit to moving forward every day in any increment you can. No matter how you measure them, it’s making and keeping appointments with yourself every day that counts the most. Habitual daily action is what it takes to move ahead on your own road map to the perfect life… success as YOU define it! Be CONSISTENT and PERSISTENT and without a doubt I WILL see you at the top.

DREAM BIG!!!

What’s Your Dream Worth?

Anyone who’s known me for more than 90 seconds knows that the words “Dream Big” show up a LOT in my life. You’ll see them at the end of every one of my emails and just about everywhere else in my digital “footprint” not just as an upbeat catchphrase, but because these words have real meaning for me and for my family. When you’re powered by a dream that truly inspires you, you’re going to be unstoppable. I was reminded of this again in a vivid way as I experienced the Walt Disney World theme park through the eyes of my daughter Jayden this week.

As I looked around the Magic Kingdom and took in the sights, the sounds, the experiences, I was moved by the fact that ALL of it… the entire Disney entertainment empire… began with one man and one dream. Walt Disney himself said, “All your dreams can come true if you have the courage to pursue them” and he and his brother Roy fulfilled their dream by tapping into the dreams of others. Today, Disney is the largest media conglomerate in the world, earning $35 billion annually, not only from their name-brand theme parks in the U.S., Europe and Asia, but also through ESPN, the ABC network and the pioneering Pixar venture that has opened up a whole new world of digital animation that was beyond almost anyone’s imagination when Steamboat Willie hit the silver screen back in 1928. And to think it all began with a cartoon rodent named Mickey Mouse and a visionary named Walt Disney who refused to take no for an answer.

Walt Disney stuck to his dreams and made them real regardless of adversity. When you see success on the scale he created, it’s easy to forget that he stood up to more than his share of resistance and went through some lean times before he got others to buy in to his vision. In his own words… “Biggest problem? Well, I’d say it’s been my biggest problem all my life. MONEY. It takes a lot of money to make these dreams come true. From the very start it was a problem. Getting the money to open Disneyland. About seventeen million it took. And we had everything mortgaged including my personal insurance.” To this day, Disney holds the record for the most Academy Award nominations (59) and the number of Oscars awarded (22).

The significance of all this came rushing back to me this week as I saw my little daughter Jayden’s dream fulfilled before my eyes. Somehow she discovered that it was possible to “dine with the princesses” at the Disney resort and I could see the burning desire and belief in her little face. Focusing only on possibilities, we contacted the venue on a few hours notice. “Sorry,” they said. “Breakfast is sold out… but wait a minute… it looks like we have a dinner spot open around 4:00.” When we arrived, the host said, “This never happens… we’re always booked out two or three months in advance!” “Well,” I said. “It happens to me all the time!” We manifested another big dream that day as my two little princesses experienced their own touch of Walt Disney’s relentless magic dining with their favorite Disney characters.

“The way to get started is to quit talking and begin doing.”  I close with these wise words from Walt Disney and ask you to consider this; it’s impossible to overestimate the power of a dream… even one that’s as seemingly insignficant as a cartoon mouse. What you think about, you bring about, so why not make it a BIG dream? Can you see yourself on the Amalfi Coast of Italy at the m3 in Sorrento? Can you see yourself enjoying the rewards of changing lives in huge numbers by giving them the empowering gift of financial literacy? Everything worthwhile you see around you began with a dream and one person who was willing to hold onto it even when others said they were crazy. Dreams DO come true… just ask Walt Disney and my daughter Jayden. It really IS important to…

DREAM BIG!!!
